Featured Frame Materials

Metal Frames:

Monel and Nickel Silver based metals are the most commonly used materials in metal frames. Monel is usually an alloy of nickel and copper. Frames made out of Monel and Nickel Silver materials are hard and sturdy, yet flexible enough to be adjustable. Due to the high Nickel content this type of material is not recommended for individuals that tend to have problems with less expensive jewelry and have allergic reaction to Nickel.

Stainless Steel is stronger and lighter than Monel/Nickel Silver, and is corrosion-resistant. The stainless steel is a better choice for those who may be allergic to nickel and who are looking for a lightweight frame that is strong. Many frame say "stainless steel" on them, however they may be a combination of stainless steel and other metals. For best and most corrosion-resistant stainless steel frame, look for one marked 100% or pure stainless steel.

Titanium is ultra-lightweight, as much as 40% lighter, very strong and completely noncorrosive. This high-tech metal is used in supersonic aircraft construction. This material is ideal for individuals that have allergies or problems with any other types of metals. The cost of a titanium frame is higher because it is a rare earth metal, and needs special equipment to fabricate.

Memory Metal is made of special titanium and some nickel alloy. This material has special properties that will return it to the original shape after accidental twisting or bending. Because they hold their shape and adjustment longer, they are ideal for individuals who are rough on their glasses, play sports, or fall asleep in their glasses.

Plastic Frames

Plastic frames are available in many different plastic materials. Different materials offer wide ranges of color, densities, and durability depending on how the frame was processed. Many high-end designer plastic frames are made by milling or cutting the plastic from large sheets. This creates a stronger more stable material. Lower end plastic frames are made by injecting liquefied material into molds. This method is more cost effective and less wasteful, but develops a less durable, less stable frame.
